In Greek mythology  Ariadne is a daughter of Minos and Pasiphae, king and queen of Crete.
Ariadne gave the Athenian hero Theseus,  who came to Crete in order to slay the Minotaur (part man, part bull), a ball of thread, which he let unwind through the labyrinth, where the  Minotaur was kept. By using the string Theseus was able to return from the labyrinth after killing the monster.
